Dental Health Products

You can use additional home care products as listed below in combination with brushing for better oral home care.

Dental Chews (all dental chews have the potential to be a choking hazard and should be used under direct supervision)

DOG
CET Veggident - CET Veggident chews are for great for large and small dogs. These chews are approved by the Veterinary Oral Health Council for tartar control. They do not contain meat products and may be appropriate for animals with food allergies (ask your veterinarian first if your dog has a food allergy). As they are not a rawhide, they do not pose a risk of gastrointestinal obstruction if swallowed whole.

Tartar Shield Dental Chew products - Tartar Shield Chews are made from small pieces of rawhide compressed into a chew. Unlike other rawhides, Tartar Shield products will break apart in the stomach and, therefore, will not cause an obstruction if swallowed whole.  Tartar Shield chews are coated with a unique mixture containing sodium tripolyphosphate and cetyl pyridinium chloride. This mixture works to prevent plaque and tartar build-up, reduce bacteria, clean teeth, and freshen breath.

CAT
Greenies Dental Treats - These treats have a unique shape and crunchy texture to reduce tartar. They may not be appropriate for patients with food allergies.  If your cat has a food allergy or any other chronic disease (kidney disease, urinary disease) please check with your veterinarian prior to giving Greenies Dental Treats. Feed as a snack or treat in conjunction with your cat’s regular diet daily. As with any treat, always adjust amount of main meal to compensate for calories delivered by treats. Greenies Dental Treats are formulated for cats one year old or older. To help maintain freshness, we recommend sealing the bag tightly and storing it in a cool, dry location.

Dental Diets

DOGS
Hill’s T/D Dental Diet Food - Hill’s T/D Dental Diet Food comes is a large breed and small breed variety. This diet has been approved by the Veterinary Oral Health Council for plaque and tartar. This dental diet works thru the physical properties of the kibble. The kibble nuggets are quite large and must be chewed before swallowing. The nuggets are hard but not brittle, and so the teeth sink deep into the nugget before it splits. As the tooth is penetrating the nugget, the fibers in the food gently abrade the tooth surface, thereby removing the plaque. Please check with you veterinarian before switching to a dental diet as it is not appropriate for patients with food allergies or other chronic diseases such as renal or urinary disease. When switching to a new diet please switch your dog slowly over 4-5 days to decrease the chance of gastric upset.
